    Contribute to the Web Site

SD-FUN is sometimes mistakenly referred to as being the site of an individual.  It's actually a community site - your site!

No technical knowledge is required to contribute. If you know of events that would be of interest, please add them to the Schedule page. (Click on the button near the bottom of that page.) Other news, etc. can be emailed to Marie or Todd at mail@sd-fun.org for inclusion on the site. If you are an SD-FUN member with access stronger than "guest", you can update most of the Wiki pages (such as this page or the News page) by clicking the edit link. For more information on the Wiki, visit the Wiki Info page.

Help "Build It For The Kids"

The new Children's Museum will be fantastic, but not inexpensive to build. You can help by participating in a fundraiser or contributing in other ways. For example, a contribution from $175 to $750 can place your name or the name of a loved one on a tile in the donor plaza. For more ways to help, visit the San Diego Children's Museum website

Help Camp Fire USA Keep Camp Cahito

Local Camp Fire leader Julie Licari is spreading the word about Camp Cahito (Camp On Hilltop in Town). Located on 7 acres in Balboa Park, activities include swimming, archery, arts, crafts, hiking, exploring the world around, drama, outdoor living skills, camp songs and much more.

Julie reports, "Our lease is up for renewal come November 2007 and we hope to show the city we need this acreage for many more years to come... not a city truck maintenance yard they claim they want it for. Beside the environmental downfall to their plan, our city's children would lose a place for summer camps, outdoor skill & team building, camping, and countless valuable benefits Camp Cahito offers to local families."

Camp Fire USA is encouraging the Balboa Park leadership to keep the camp and working to determine what is needed in their master plans for a renovation of the site. Putting in a good word for the camp with the City or Balboa Park would be appreciated.

Promote Safe Walking for Children Downtown

Julie Licari writes, "I hope you can join me make our streets downtown safer for children. Yesterday, channel 10 did a story about unsafe intersections downtown with an advocacy group Walk San Diego.

The intersection 2nd & Cedar was highlighted as a grave crossing for pedestrians. It got me thinking about how my own daily experiences walking with a stroller and the close calls I encounter more than not. As a resident since 1992, my own corner of G & Columbia traffic has tripled and even quadrupled during events. With the popular use of Pantoja Park, just crossing G st. has me often hesitant. One future fear is First avenue with the Children's Museum coming we will encounter grave safety issues just in that corridor alone.

Amy Pasko of Little Italy pointed out the close calls of her streets Grape, Kettner, & Hawthorn, as well as the poor heights of most curbs with large drains where a stroller or wheelchair cannot cross or the mid-crossing island has no safe room for strollers.

In their story, Walk San Diego did not mention family safety but that could be brought to their attention and with our involvement it could be a top concern. You are encouraged to email your concerns to:

Ridding City Streets of Obscene Materials

Parents who would like to become involved in an effort to rid the downtown of obscene newsracks --- materials to which children have easy access and that contain advertisements encouraging pedophile behavior --- can contact Colleen Cochran. She and other concerned citizens are speaking to City Council members about the matter, and working hard to rid the city streets of obscene materials. 619/232-5484. (This effort may be completed for Little Italy; news should be in the June 17 meeting minutes for the Little Italy Residents Association. Once available, the minutes will be on the web here.)
